Breed Care Guide
The British Longhair shares the British Shorthair's gentle nature and cobby build, with one key difference: a long coat that needs more grooming.
Coat & Grooming
- Long, dense double coat. Comb 3–4 times a week to prevent tangles and mats, paying attention to behind the ears, the armpits, and the belly/trousers.
- Expect more hairballs than a shorthair — consistent grooming is the best prevention.
Body & Build
- Same stocky, slow-maturing build as the British Shorthair. Watch portions and keep them lean.
Temperament & Living With Them
- Calm, gentle and relaxed — an undemanding companion that settles easily into family life.
Health Watch-points
- As with the British Shorthair, reputable lines are screened for HCM and PKD. Maintain a healthy weight, annual vet checks and dental care. Refer to the cattery handover and your vet for your kitten's specific records.
